I've had that shiver, but I get it from very different things. Monuments don't stir my sense of patriotism. A finely-produced speech that inspires will do it. Watching my husband receive a medal for saving lives did it. To me, patriotism involves a personal investment. It means you see your duty and perform it, that you take the steps that will protect and serve what you believe in and hold dear.

The early founding fathers did that. Do you know that Washington was offered the position of First King of America and turned it down? He demanded democracy. That is patriotism in action. That is the kind of thing that sends the chill down my spine.
